Poverty was rampant among the Jats due to lack of education. They were only nominal owners of their lands as whatever produced by the Jats on their lands used to go to moneylenders as interest for the debts taken by them and they used to get only a fraction of the produce. Since, the farmers were uneducated moneylenders used to charge exorbitant rate of interest for their loans, because of which farmers were unable to repay their loans even generation after generation.
  2. Sir Chhotu Ram knew about all these injustices, since he had spent his childhood in the same environment. That’s why when he came to power he introduced farmer friendly enactments like Punjab Relief Indebtedness Act in 1934 and Punjab Debtor’s Protection Act in 1936, to eradicate the injustices done to farmer by the moneylenders.
  3. He also created awareness among the Jats about their rights and importance of education. He encouraged the Jats to educate their children as illiteracy was the root cause of all their sufferings. The sole aim of his life was to eradicate all the injustices done to Jats and farmers and to ensure a decent standard of living for them.
